Bukit Binatang collects, curates and redistributes animal imagery from around the world, with particular emphasis on Asia and the Middle East. The project focuses on the confluence of scientific description, cultural interpretation and practice, and the non-human animal body.
Imagery and footage that come from this juncture - scientific illustration, textbook diagrams, wildlife society logos, in the home, the feedlot, the museum, and so on – are an important part of understanding how the animal is perceived, used and lived alongside. Political, geographical, socio-cultural and language boundaries exert influence over the animal image and body, and it is these that the project explores, away from the dominant and familiar Western models of representation.
